Fifty Shades of Black (2016) Review

Published by: Anthony Wallace

Fifty_Shades_of_Black_posterFrom the director who brought us ‘A Haunted House‘ (2013) & ‘A Haunted House 2‘ (2014) comes the anticipated spoof film of the highly successful ‘Fifty Shades of Grey’. The movie stars Marlon Wayans as the ever successful Christian Black who after meeting Hannah, a less fortunate college student, goes to ask how far she is willing to take sexual pleasures to a whole other level.

Coming from a director who’s fairly new to Hollywood with some credits on television, you’d assume one would want to get better and grow. Yet for Director Michael Tiddes, he has a fix for spoof movies and went after the hotly ‘Fifty Shades‘ series. There is nothing redeeming nor satisfying about this film. It can be noticed from the trailer alone as your subjected to cheap gags and references to better performed movies. One is basically getting the mockery of what ‘Fifty Shades of Grey‘ brought upon itself when it released in theaters last year.

Something has to be said about these films and the actors who play a part in them. Firstly, we’ve watched Marlon Wayan’s career head south ever since the first ‘Scary Movie‘ (2000) hit theaters. And for the most part his career has struggled to stay relevant in Hollywood. Just like Kevin Hart, Wayan’s is typecast for these roles in comedies. These movies have also been low budget with a known fact that by tying the name to a popular movie and playing it off as a spoof will only draw crowds to go see it. Low and behold ‘Fifty Shades Of Black‘ is no different.

Everyone was trying to be too funny with very little pay off in the end. If there was one scene that had some value was when Florence Henderson made an appearance as one of Christian’s first sex partners. A reference to one of the best films in 2014 was made that if you pay close attention you can’t miss it. Aside from that everything is a retread of what we saw in ‘Fifty Shades Of Grey‘. Consequently the runtime for the movie felt longer then it needed to be thus prolonging for the movie to be over. I had to look at my watch a few times to see how much more of this madness was left.

Just because the movie’s a spoof doesn’t mean its funny. If your smarter than these characters don’t go see this movie even if your life depended on it. With very few good laughs, over the top performances, bad pacing, and an attempt to make much of anything this has to go down as one of the worst movies of the year thus far.

Rating: 1/10

  1. I guess I am going to trust your opinion being that I originally felt it was going to be a piece of crap, and I still have not seen the film. I have heard that it was awful from other people as well.
